I went to see the post office/apartment building today. The person leasing the upstairs of the building had apparently been there for years and years and is moving out next month. She was paying five fifty a month to the owner who lives in California for four large rooms, but the real estate agent seemed to think that apartment was worth at least six fifty. The small apartment next to the post office with the kitchen in the vault was disappointing. I expected the kitchen to take up the back of the apartment, but it was one of the smallest, narrowest kitchens I'd ever seen. It took up two thirds of the space and then had a full bath in a half bath sized space right next to it and then a side exit next to that.
The ad mentioned fireplaces in every room. Thing is, they're coal burning fireplaces. Using them would burn the whole building down. The place was cold enough you had to wear a jacket inside, so heating it is no doubt super expensive. The real estate agent couldn't tell us how much the heating costs were. Said he didn't know, but was probably just trying to avoid finding out from anyone who did. My mom pointed out, after we left, that none of the huge windows in every room had storm windows installed, so that's even more cold air coming in.
The post office, who was paying five fifty a month as well, for half the space as the upstairs tenant, was expressing an interest in expanding over into the apartment next door, but government agencies work very slowly. The yard in back was very nice. The small basement looked like it'd been flooded a couple times and the floor had been recently painted to cover that up. And they'd installed some plywood over the pipes in the cieling in what looked like an attempt to hide something. Maybe they were rusting. The furnace was over thirty years old.
The only way into what the real estate agent said wasn't even an attic was an opening eleven feet up. You can see dormer windows from the outside of the building, so it sort of made me wonder what kind of space is up there. It's fairly inaccessable though.
Other than that, all in all, a nice property, but not for me.
