My brother and sister both own houses. My parents paid the downpayment, but my siblings pay their own mortgages. If they ever sell their houses they have to pay back the downpayment, but as long as they live in them they don't have to worry about it.
I saw an old bank building for sale in the paper last week and fell in love with it. My mom and I are going to look at it tomorrow. It's in an off the beaten path section of the county.
The building has an apartment upstairs, an apartment downstairs and the other half of the downstairs holds the local post office. I could rent out one of the apartments and live in the other. The post office has five years left on their lease and is likely to renew. I wouldn't make a profit off it and the area's very unlikely to ever be developed, but I would have a beautiful place to live at a cost comparable to what I'm paying right now in rent.
