I replied to a guy on craigslist the other day who was wondering why woman around here seem less friendly than women from other places. I pointed out that there's only about two degrees of seperation between people in this town, so what looks like unfriendliness from women is just caution because they're never sure which of their friends or family members you know and what sort of preconcieved notions you might have based on the stories you've probably already heard.
Some random guy emailed me about my reply. He said, "I identify with what you're saying exactly. I've only lived here for a couple of years myself, and it seems like everyone is connected with each other. It's the high school atmosphere all over again. I thought I left that all behind. Instead, I came here for grad school and, while this town is a little bigger, the problems are the same. You need to get out of your bubble.
26/m, by the way."
I wasn't going to reply to him, but then two friends who were supposed to be going out with me last night flaked out. I wasn't looking forward to going out alone, so I sent him an email while I was waiting for it to be late enough to go out. We talked back and forth and he agreed to meet me at the bar I was going to.
I had originally planned to go to a CD release party at one bar, but then it turned out my brother's band was playing several blocks down the street an hour earlier than the main act for the other show went on, so I parked in front of the bar that had the later show and walked the six or seven blocks down to the bar where my brother's band was playing. He was pretty drunk and started dedicating songs about "men-strew-ation" to tables full of college girls who had been heckling him. Since I got there a few minutes early, before the band actually went on, my brother told his guitarist to buy me a drink, so I was a bit toasty when the guy from craigslist arrived.
We stood by the bar and watched my brother come down from the stage, walk all the way to the back of the room with a megaphone, distorting the words to the song, before getting back on stage and sort of finishing it. I started leaning into the guy. My lips grazed his cheek when we leaned in close to talk. I'm sure my boob grazed his arm. He offered to buy me a drink. I took him up on it. He liked the music.
I got drunk.
We agreed to walk down the street and go see the other band. I gave him my scarf. We kissed and almost ran into a tree. He pushed me into a bus shelter and kissed me some more. My nose was cold, but I'd had enough to drink that nothing else was. The kiss was wet and cold and good. We went back to walking. He tried to convince me we should skip the second band and just go back to his place. I told him we should go in for a little while at least. We did.
It was more crowded than I expected. We wedged ourselves in near the merchandise table and I bought the opening band's cd even though they'd long since gone on. (I have a tendancy to buy cds when I've been drinking.) We stayed for a few songs. I asked him if he wanted to go, then started to try to make my way toward the door before he'd even nodded.
We got out on the street and I said, "Well that sobered me up." He agreed. The crowd had been so closed in around us it had been impossible not to sober up some. I drove him home. He invited me in, put on some music, made me a drink, rum and some sort of fruity diet sprite. I made fun of him for having diet sprite and choked down maybe a third of the drink before abandoning it in favor of making out on his couch.
I found out he was from Ohio, had gone to school in DC and was now getting his law degree. We did more kissing than talking. He got my shirt off. I was determined to keep my pants on. He led me into the bedroom.
We kissed until 3:30 in the morning.
(I doubt I'll ever see him again.)
